The new (CLASP prefabricated) Science block built around 1959 in what was previously the head teacher's garden, and amongst the building eventually demolished circa 2012 to make way for parking for the new housing developments. [webmaster 2022-01-31 15:44:15]
It was great to move from the dungeon like old chemistry lab into these bright new labs. As I remember it there was a grand opening. A sulfur dioxide dispenser sat in the fume cupboard. The lab was full of admiring parents and pupils when the top of this container sheared off, quickly filling the room with choking fumes. I hung my head out of the window very frightened as breathing was difficult. Some body turned on all the taps to help dissolve the gas and everyone was able to escape without too much harm.
